Venues and Activity Areas

Hood Scout Reservation has facilities that can be rented & reserved via our Online Reservation System by groups both inside and outside the scouting program.  For more information about using HSR please contact the Council Service Center. 

Council Arena

Constructed in 2018, the McLarty-Cooke Council Arena is a premier venue for large gatherings.  Complete with full and modern multi-media capabilities, the Arena is a beautiful setting after a fun day at camp. 

Challenge Course

The Hood Scout Reservation Challenge Course has two climbing sides, a 48’ repelling side, a 30’ repelling side, dual zip lines, an eight-element safe roller course, Swing Choice, and a C.O.P.E. Course.

Three climbing walls which are approximately 50’ high. The Climbing walls range from easy to difficult. This is for youth 11 and older and adults. 

3 rappelling walls.  Two walls are 30’ and one is a 50’ rappel.  All rappels are high anchor rappels and are on a flat wall.  The two 30′ rappels are for youth 9 and older, and adults.  The 50’ rappel is designed for youth 11 and older, and adults.  

20’ long bouldering wall that is 8’ tall under a covered pavilion. Designed for youth 6 and older, and adults.

This is an approximately 50’ tall giant two pole swing.  It is a single person swing lifted into the air by a team of people.  The swinger can decide how high and when they want to swing.  It is primarily designed as a COPE element. It is designed for youth 11 and older, and adults

Two approximately 475’ parallel zip lines.  Both begin at a 50’ height and end on a platform that is 20’ off the ground.  The zip lines can be used for individual zipping or racing each other.  At the end of the Zip is the Perfect Decent belay device where the zip line rider is in a 20’ belayed free fall from the zip line receiving tower to the ground.  It is designed for youth 11 and older, and adults

A competition event where teams can compete to see who can stack the most milk crates. Teams are top belayed for safety.  It is designed for youth 11 and older, and adults.

COPE is designed to meet the needs of people of all ages who are seeking ways to challenge and expand their physical and mental abilities. As a noncompetitive program, COPE permits every participant to succeed. The group activities are ideal for enhancing the leadership and teamwork of Scout units, and activities that challenge individuals can be used to promote self-efficacy and personal growth. The Program emphasizes eight major goals: Communication, Planning, Teamwork, Trust, Leadership, Decision Making, Problem Solving and Self Esteem. The Program uses the following events: Initiative Games, Trust Events, Low-Course Events and High-Course Events.

Our goal is to make the challenge course programs easily available to youth and to the public.  We have certified instructors to teach the Climbing merit badge, and provide high adventure opportunities. 

Shooting Sports

We have a group of NRA certified instructor/Range Officers available to teach the shooting sports merit badge, teach the NRA training courses and provide shooting sporting opportunities for youth. Instruction can be conducted as part your unit meetings or at camp on the weekend. Shooting takes place using camp guns, ammo, & targets at Hood Scout Reservation. 

Archery Range

Archery is a popular skill taught in our dedicated area.

ATV, Mountain Boarding and Biking

The Outdoor Adventure Building is the base for all trail programs.

The popular ATV Trail Riding program utilize over 20 miles of trails at HSR. All riders must by at least 13 years old and complete the ASI ATV RiderCourse. ATV’s are for onsite usage only and no personal ATV’s can be used. Limit is 9 riders.

ASI ATV Rider Course Training a six hour course for those that want to learn how to safely operate an ATV. Riders learn the basics on the operation and maintenance of an ATV. Riders must have completed this course before they are able to Trail Ride at Hood Scout Reservation. 

HSR has over twenty miles of clearly marked mountain biking trials for any skill level of rider.  Rider can use one of our Giant brand mountain biking for $5.00 per person or bring their own.  

HSR has 3 different mountain boarding areas for any skill of mountain boarder and rental equipment is available.

Aquatics and Boating

The Johnson Family Boating Area is located on our 110 acre lake and hosts summer programs like Motorboating, Rowing, Canoeing, Kayaking, Paddleboating and Sailing.

Canoeing, Kayaking and Paddleboarding are available for rental at HSR during the off season.  

The Kickapoo area includes the Blob and Dual Water Slides and is named for the council camp that served the youth of Andrew Jackson Council from 1930-1986. 

Dining Hall

Great youth-centered meals are provided in the Dining Hall. Professional cooks prepare all meals and menus under the direction of a dietitian and our Food Service Committee. 

Trading Post

The Trading Post provides some camping essentials, memorabilia, t-shirts, patches, cups, snacks, ice cream, drinks, and of course our famous slushes. Cash and cards are accepted. 

Health Lodge

During resident camps, the Health Lodge is staffed 24 hours a day by two highly qualified healthcare professionals. Medication storage is located there. too. Please note that our Health Lodge staff cannot offer physical exams.

Central Showers

HSR has three modern central shower locations located strategically throughout the camp. The North, Central and South Shower Facilities each include individual showers and restrooms.
